
At 5,895m Kilimanjaro is Africa's highest mountain. Situated to the north of Moshi, Kilimanjaro takes .between 5 and 9 days to climb depending on fitness levels and the route chosen. You have a higher chance of success if you choose a longer trip to allow for better acclimatisation. Cold weather and mountaineering gear can be hired locally. Each group is accompanied by a ranger, a guide, a cook and several porters. Prices start at $1,800 per person for the 5 day Marangu route.

Mt Meru lies 70km to the west of Kilimanjaro near the town of Arusha. At 4,566m Meru is Kilimanjaro's smaller cousin but is generally regarded as a more technical climb without all of the challenges of Kili's high altitude. Climbing Mt Meru takes 3 or 4 days staying at 2 rest camps on the way. Cold weather gear is essential and can be hired locally if necessary. Prices start at $1,200 for the 3 day trip.
